I don’t want to get too Frost on you, but there’s truly nothing like New England in  beats by docteur dre the Fall. The explosions of color reveal shades and hues that you never knew existed, in combinations that you never imagined. There is the crisp chill in the air as folks reap the Harvest, and each sunset is a careful reminder of The Cycle.
Fall is a ritualistic and pagan time of the year, punctuated with festivals, gatherings, and traditions that have been passed down for generations. Ironically enough, Fall marks the rebirth of most mainstream sports (football, basketball, hockey). Yet there is one pastime that runs a parallel to Nature’s schedule: baseball.
Fall means October. October means playoff baseball. Playoff baseball means Yankees and Red Sox. And whether or not you’re from the Northeast, a fan of either team, a follower of baseball, or merely a worshiper of Sport, the events that unfold this weekend in Boston command attention and respect.
The Yankees (94-65) control a one-game lead over their bitter rivals. Boston (93-66) is the defending World Series champion and has sat in the driver’s seat in the American League East for the majority of the season. But now they must defend their turf to further defend their title. The two teams will meet for an emotional three-game series this weekend, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday in Fenway Park.
Given everything that the Red Sox went through to claim that 2004 championship (overcoming 86-year curse, greatest comeback in sports history, etc.) it would be anticlimactic if they didn’t make it back to the postseason. For the aging Yankees, making one final run to cap a dynastic decade, it  would be an exorcism of sorts and the first step in diminishing Boston’s crowning achievement.
This is the eighth year in a row that these two teams have finished first or second in the AL East, and is the 18th such occurrence in the last century. Since 2003, these teams are dead even at 34-34 against one another (that includes 7-7 in the postseason), with the Yankees holding a 9-7 edge in 2005.
The fly in the ointment is Cleveland. The Indians (93-66) are currently tied with the Red Sox for the AL Wild Card and have been playing out of their heads for two months (39-13 since July 31). The Tribe will host AL Central foe Chicago (95-63), who clinched the division with a win on Thursday. As a result, the White Sox will most likely rest most of their starters, and hit cruise control against the Indians. It would benefit Chicago for Cleveland to make the playoffs, since that would  monster power beats by dre mean they avoid New York or Boston, instead facing the beat up Angels.
There are still a host of scenarios that could occur, with most of them ending at a one-game playoff on Monday between teams either fighting for the Wild Card or AL East crown. Even the sports books are uncertain over who is going to come out on top this weekend between the Yanks and Sox. I’ve seen New York (3/1) as slight favorites to win the American League pennant and advance to the World Series. But I’ve also seen Boston as the chalk pick at 2/1. Where we  beats dr dre review stand right now, neither is even guaranteed a playoff slot!
This matchup is of the best two hitting teams in the Major Leagues. The Red Sox (.281 batting, 5.6 runs per) are No. 1 and the Yankees (.276, 5.5) are No. 2. However, both of these teams have had horrendously inconsistent pitching throughout the year. New York has the 22nd ranked staff in the league, and Boston possesses the worst bullpen (5.42 ERA) in the bigs. In what  reviews for beats by dr dre figures to be a tightly contested series, that bullpen insecurity ? compared to the Hammer of God, NY’s Mariano Rivera ? could doom the Sox.
Another subplot is that the American League Most Valuable Player award could be decided this weekend as well. Boston’s David “Big Papi” Ortiz and New York’s $25 Million Dollar Man Alex Rodriguez are the two frontrunners. Ortiz (.296 BA, 47 HR, 146, RBI, .600 SLG) has been the most clutch hitter in the game over the last two years, and A-Rod (.320 BA, 47 HR, 129 RBI, .610 SLG) is undoubtedly the best all-around ball player in the Majors.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the pitching matchups set for this weekend:
Friday, September 30, 7:05 p.m.
New York (Wang 8-4) at Boston (Wells 14-7)David Wells has been on both sides of this blood feud over the course of his career. He has already said that he would retire if the Sox won another title. This truly is his last hurrah, and could be the last game he ever pitches. It will be interesting to see how newcomer Chien-Ming Wang responds to this sort of pressure.
Saturday, October 1, 1:10 p.m.
New York (Johnson 16-8) at Boston (Wakefield 16-11)This game is why Randy Johnson is in pinstripes. The Yankees didn’t bring him to  docteur dre beats the Bronx last year, and it cost them. Like Wells, he is trying to add one final line to his opus. Wakefield has undoubtedly been the Red Sox ace in the second half of the year.
Sunday, October 2, 2:05 p.m.
New York (Mussina 13-8) at Boston (Schilling 7-8)I could revisit the gutsy performance of Schilling in Game 6 of last year’s ALCS. Or talk about how weak Mussina has been in the clutch throughout his career. Or I could start spewing stats about how each has performed over their last 10 starts. But I won’t, because Sunday afternoon none of that will matter.
Instead, I’d like to mention that in 1949 the Red Sox entered a final, two-game series with the Yankees needing just one win to clinch the pennant. They lost both, with a 5-3 decision (and the pennant) going the Yanks way in the second game, played on Oct. 2.
In 1978, the teams wound up tied for first in the East and played a 163rd game to decide which would advance. The Yankees won 5-4 when some guy named Bucky Dent blasted a crushing three-run home in the seventh. That game was played on Oct. 2.
History. Tradition. Emotion. Should be another classic Fall.Questions or comments for Robert? E-mail robert@docsports.com.
